Short answer: buy the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max if the camera matters most to you, and the iPhone Duo if screen size matters most. They run the same chip, so this is not a performance decision. The Pro models keep the telephoto lens and Face ID; the Duo trades both for a 7.6-inch folding display.
Apple announced all three at its "Surprise and shine" event on 9 September 2026 — notably, the first keynote led by John Ternus after he succeeded Tim Cook as CEO. Here is how they compare for UAE buyers.

What's genuinely new in the iPhone 18 Pro
The variable aperture camera is the real story
This is the first iPhone camera with a physically moving aperture. Six laser-cut blades shift between four aperture settings, controlling depth of field and light intake mechanically — the way a dedicated camera lens does. Every previous iPhone had a fixed aperture and simulated background blur in software.
It works automatically, or you can take manual control through a new Pro controls panel exposing shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram. Apple has also opened an API so third-party camera apps can drive the aperture themselves.
Why it matters in practice: narrow apertures keep more of a scene in focus, which helps with landscapes and group shots. Wide apertures let in more light and genuinely blur the background rather than approximating it. If you have ever found iPhone portrait mode cutting awkwardly around hair or glasses, this addresses the root cause.
The A20 Pro is Apple's first 2-nanometre chip
A 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores, a 6-core GPU, and a second Neural Engine. The second Neural Engine is the significant addition — Apple is positioning these as its most capable on-device AI hardware, which matters as more Apple Intelligence processing runs locally rather than in the cloud.
The thermal system was redesigned
A vapor chamber now moves heat away from the processor. The practical effect is sustained performance — long 4K recording, extended gaming and large exports hold peak speed instead of throttling after a few minutes. Both Pro models are slightly heavier than their predecessors as a result of this and larger batteries.
Battery life took a real jump
Up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max — the longest Apple has shipped. Removing the physical SIM tray freed internal space for roughly two additional hours.
The number worth remembering: five minutes of wired charging on the Pro Max returns about seven hours of video playback.
The Dynamic Island shrank and gained capacity
It is physically smaller but now shows three Live Activities at once rather than one. Tracking a flight, a delivery and a timer simultaneously no longer means switching between them.
What the iPhone Duo actually is
Apple's first foldable opens like a book from a 5.4-inch phone into a 7.6-inch inner display — around 50% more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple also calls it the thinnest iPhone ever built.
iOS 27 adapts depending on whether the device is closed, partially folded or fully open. Netflix, Zoom and Slack already support the larger format.
Three things the Duo gives up
Being clear about these matters more than the marketing:
1. No telephoto lens. The Duo has a dual 48MP system — Main and Ultra Wide. There is no dedicated telephoto and no long optical zoom. The Pro models reach up to 8x optical-quality.
2. No Face ID. The Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button. The folding design cannot accommodate the Face ID sensor array.
3. No ProRes or Apple Log. Those remain Pro-only features. The Duo does support Dolby Vision HDR, 4K at 120fps, Spatial Audio recording and Apple's computational photography stack.
Three things only the Duo does
Duo Preview shows the person you are photographing a live view of themselves on the outer screen while you shoot — genuinely useful for portraits.
Smart Take captures several versions of a shot simultaneously so you can choose afterwards.
Kid Cue plays animations on the outer display to hold a child's attention toward the lens. A small feature that parents will use constantly.
Common questions
Is the iPhone Duo faster than the iPhone 18 Pro? No. All three run the same A20 Pro chip with 12GB of RAM. Performance is effectively identical. The choice is about screen size, camera capability and biometrics — not speed.
Which has the better camera? The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Both have a triple 48MP system with variable aperture and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. The Duo has dual 48MP cameras with no telephoto. If photography is your priority, choose a Pro model.
Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID? No. It uses Touch ID in the side button. This is the only current iPhone without Face ID.
Which iPhone has the best battery life? The iPhone 18 Pro Max, at up to 45 hours of video playback. The iPhone Duo reaches 44 hours folded but drops to 31 hours when using the inner display.
Are UAE iPhone 18 Pro models eSIM only? Yes. UAE models have no physical SIM tray and activate only by eSIM. Apple supports two active eSIMs and storage for eight or more. If your number is currently on a physical SIM, arrange a transfer with your carrier before setup.
Is there a standard iPhone 18? Not this year. Apple has split its release schedule — the standard iPhone 18 has moved to spring 2027. If you want a non-Pro iPhone now, the iPhone 17 remains available.
Is 256GB enough? On a Pro model, for most people yes. On the Duo, be more careful: a 7.6-inch display, 4K 120fps video and dual 48MP cameras fill storage faster than a standard iPhone. If you shoot a lot of video, consider 512GB.
Six tips most buyers miss
1. eSIM transfer is the number one setup problem in the UAE. Contact your carrier before your phone arrives and confirm the eSIM transfer process. Doing this in advance avoids being without service on launch day.
2. Installing iOS 27 does not switch on the new Siri. You have to enable it: Settings → Siri → Try Siri AI (Beta). Many people assume it activates automatically and conclude nothing changed.
3. Decide your storage tier before you order. In the UAE, 512GB adds AED 850 and 2TB adds AED 2,550 on both Pro models. Changing your mind afterwards means a return, not an upgrade.
4. Burgundy usually sells out first. New colours consistently go before established ones. If you want the new finish, order early rather than deliberating.
5. Apple Trade In is worth checking first. In the UAE, trading an iPhone 13 or later returns AED 640 to AED 3,260 in credit. A good-condition iPhone 17 Pro Max can reach the top of that range — which meaningfully changes what you actually pay.
6. The iPhone Duo ships without a power adapter. Only a 1-metre USB-C cable is in the box. Factor an adapter into your budget.
So which one should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if you want flagship performance and the full camera system in a phone that stays comfortable one-handed. At AED 5,099 it is also the least expensive way into the A20 Pro and variable aperture camera.
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if battery life is your priority. Forty-five hours of video playback is the best Apple has shipped, and the five-minute fast charge genuinely changes how you manage a long day.
Choose the iPhone Duo if you want a tablet-sized screen in your pocket and accept the trade-offs. Readers, people who work from their phone, and anyone currently carrying both a phone and a tablet get the most from it. Buy it for the screen — not as a straight upgrade from a Pro Max.
Stay with what you have if you are on an iPhone 17 Pro. The generational jump is real but not dramatic, and your current phone will run iOS 27 well.
