Apple iPhone Duo vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: Line-by-Line Comparison (2026)

Aliasgar Dudhiawala|

The short answer

If you want a foldable in your hand today, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the only one of these two you can actually buy — it went on sale 5 August 2026, and it is the wider, lighter, more pocketable foldable Samsung has ever made. The Apple iPhone Duo ships 23 October 2026, and nobody outside Apple has used one yet.

That asymmetry matters more than any spec row below. One of these phones has months of owner reviews, teardown data and thermal complaints behind it. The other has a press release and a launch date. We have written this comparison honestly on that basis: where Apple has not published a figure, we say so rather than filling the gap with a leak.

Line-by-line specification comparison

Displays

Specification Apple iPhone Duo Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8
Inner (unfolded) screen 7.6-inch 7.6-inch AMOLED
Outer (cover) screen 5.4-inch 5.5-inch
Panel shape when open Traditional tall foldable proportions Wider, shorter — Samsung's first wide-screen foldable
Cover screen usability Narrower strip Wider strip, closer to a normal phone
Protection Ceramic-hardened front glass Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3

The single biggest physical difference between these two phones is not size — both open to 7.6 inches — it is aspect ratio. The Z Fold 8 is Samsung's first foldable to go wide and short rather than tall and narrow. Closed, that gives you a cover screen you can actually type on with two thumbs. Open, it gives you a display shape closer to a widescreen tablet, which is better for video and worse for reading long documents in portrait. Samsung kept the old tall shape on the Z Fold 8 Ultra for people who preferred it.

The iPhone Duo keeps the conventional tall-when-open proportions, with a 5.4-inch cover screen.

Processor and memory

Specification Apple iPhone Duo Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8
Chipset Apple A20 Pro Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy
Process node 2nm 3nm class
RAM 12 GB 12 GB (16 GB on higher tiers)
Storage options 256 GB – 2 TB 256 GB – 1 TB
Storage type NVMe UFS 4.0
microSD expansion No No

Apple's A20 Pro is the first 2nm chip in a shipping phone, and on paper that is a meaningful process-node lead over the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Whether it converts into sustained real-world performance inside a folding chassis with limited cooling volume is exactly the question nobody can answer until reviewers get retail units in late October.

Storage is where the Duo pulls clearly ahead: a 2 TB option exists, which Samsung does not offer at all.

Battery and charging

Specification Apple iPhone Duo Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8
Capacity 5,800 mAh 4,800 mAh
Claimed video playback (folded) Up to 44 hours Not stated in the same format
Claimed video playback (open) Up to 31 hours Not stated in the same format
Wireless charging Yes Yes
Reverse wireless charging Yes Yes

A 1,000 mAh advantage in a foldable is not a rounding error. Apple's claimed 44 hours of folded video playback is the headline number of the entire launch, and if it survives independent testing it is the Duo's strongest single argument. Treat it as a manufacturer claim until third parties verify it.

Cameras

Specification Apple iPhone Duo Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8
Main sensor 48 MP Not independently confirmed for the base Fold 8
Second rear sensor 48 MP ultra-wide Not independently confirmed
Telephoto / optical zoom None Not independently confirmed
Cover-screen selfie camera Yes Yes
Inner-screen camera Yes Yes

Two honest notes here.

On the iPhone Duo: Apple has confirmed a dual 48 MP rear system with no dedicated telephoto lens. On a $1,999+ phone, that is a real omission. If optical zoom matters to you, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better Apple purchase and it costs less.

On the Galaxy Z Fold 8: you will see a 200 MP main sensor quoted widely online. We are not putting it in the table, because the sourcing points to the Z Fold 8 Ultra, not the standard Fold 8, and we are not prepared to print a camera spec for the wrong model. Reviewers of the base Fold 8 have consistently described the camera as its weakest area relative to price — which is itself informative.

Build, durability and biometrics

Specification Apple iPhone Duo Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8
Frame material Titanium Advanced Armor Aluminum
Water/dust rating IP68 IP48
Weight Not published by Apple 201 g
Biometric unlock Touch ID (fingerprint) Fingerprint + face recognition
Face ID No —

Two rows deserve attention.

IP68 vs IP48. Both are rated for water immersion. The difference is the first digit: solid-particle ingress. Apple's IP68 means full dust protection. Samsung's IP48 means protection against solid objects 1 mm and larger — so fine dust and sand are not covered. In the UAE, where fine sand is a year-round fact of life, that is a practical distinction, not a technicality.

Touch ID, not Face ID. The iPhone Duo uses a fingerprint sensor. Apple could not fit the Face ID array into the folding chassis. If you have been unlocking iPhones with your face since 2017, this is a daily habit change.

Samsung's 201 g is a genuinely low weight for a foldable, and it is the thing reviewers mention first. Apple has not published the Duo's weight, so we cannot compare.

Software and support

Specification Apple iPhone Duo Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8
Launch OS iOS 27 Android 17 with One UI 9
Promised OS/security updates Apple's usual long support window (not formally stated as a year count) 7 years
Multi-window / split screen iPadOS-style multitasking on the inner screen Mature One UI foldable multitasking, taskbar, app pairs
Stylus support No S Pen support varies by tier — confirm before buying

Samsung's seven-year commitment is written down and specific. Apple's support record is excellent but expressed as practice rather than a published number. On foldable multitasking specifically, Samsung has eight generations of software iteration behind it; Apple has zero.

Technicals and performance: what we actually know

Galaxy Z Fold 8 — tested, with caveats. Independent reviews aggregate to roughly 90%, broken down as display 96%, workmanship 98%, performance 94%, and price 80%. That price score is the story: reviewers like the phone and think it costs too much.

Two performance caveats appear repeatedly in Fold 8 coverage. First, thermal behaviour — several reviewers recorded the chassis getting noticeably warm under sustained load, which is a known constraint of thin folding bodies with limited heat-spreader volume. Second, Samsung temporarily blocked benchmarking apps on pre-release firmware, which delayed independent synthetic testing. Both are worth knowing; neither is described as a dealbreaker by reviewers who scored the phone 90%.

iPhone Duo — untested. There are no independent benchmarks, no thermal measurements, no battery-life verification and no durability testing, because retail units do not exist yet. Anyone publishing iPhone Duo performance conclusions today is publishing Apple's own figures with extra words around them.

What we can say analytically: the A20 Pro at 2nm should be efficient, and 5,800 mAh is a large cell for this form factor. Those two facts together make Apple's 44-hour claim plausible rather than absurd. Plausible is not verified.

Customer and reviewer feedback online

Galaxy Z Fold 8 — what owners and reviewers are saying

Praised:

  • Portability. The 201 g weight and the wider, shorter body come up in nearly every review. Owners describe it as the first foldable that does not feel like carrying two phones.
  • Immersive viewing. The wide aspect ratio suits video, and reviewers noted it makes the open display feel bigger than the diagonal suggests.
  • Build quality. A 98% workmanship score is close to the top of what any phone gets. The hinge and the Armor Aluminum frame both drew specific praise.
  • Display quality. 96%, with the crease described as less visible than previous generations.

Criticised:

  • Price. The lowest-scoring category by a wide margin. $1,900 for the base 256 GB configuration is the most common complaint in owner feedback.
  • Camera. Consistently described as the weakest part of the package relative to what the money buys.
  • Heat. Occasional thermal throttling under gaming and sustained camera use.
  • IP48, not IP68. Reviewers flagged the dust rating as the one durability spec that has not kept up.

iPhone Duo — no customer feedback exists

There is no owner feedback for the iPhone Duo, because it has not shipped. It goes on sale 23 October 2026. Any "review" you find dated before then is hands-on impressions from a controlled Apple demo area, not a verdict.

If you are the kind of buyer who reads reviews before spending $2,000, the Duo asks you to either wait until November or buy on faith.

Who should buy which one

Buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 if…

  • You want a foldable now and do not want to wait for October.
  • Weight and pocketability are your top priority. 201 g is the lightest serious foldable on the market.
  • You watch a lot of video on your phone. The wide aspect ratio is built for it.
  • You want mature foldable software — app pairs, a proper taskbar, split-screen that works with the apps you actually use.
  • You want a written seven-year update promise.
  • You are already in the Android ecosystem and switching costs would be real.

Buy the Apple iPhone Duo if…

  • You are deep in the Apple ecosystem — Mac, iPad, Watch, AirPods — and a foldable that breaks Handoff, iMessage and AirDrop is not on the table.
  • Battery life is the deciding factor. 5,800 mAh and a 2nm chip is the most promising battery combination in any foldable, if the claims hold.
  • You want IP68 dust protection — a real consideration in the Gulf.
  • You need 2 TB of internal storage. Nobody else offers it.
  • You can wait until late October, and preferably until early November so independent reviews are out.
  • You are comfortable going back to fingerprint unlock instead of Face ID.

Buy neither if…

  • Photography is your priority. The Duo has no telephoto lens. The Fold 8's camera is its weakest column. For the same money or less, the iPhone 18 Pro Max or the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra will take better photographs, every time, in every condition.
  • You want value. Both of these phones carry a foldable premium of roughly $700–900 over an excellent conventional flagship. If the folding screen is not something you will genuinely use daily, that premium buys nothing.
  • You are hard on your phone. Folding displays remain the most fragile mainstream phone component. Neither of these changes that.

Quick reference: the five differences that will actually decide it

  1. Availability — Fold 8 is on sale now; Duo ships 23 October 2026.
  2. Battery — Duo 5,800 mAh vs Fold 8 4,800 mAh.
  3. Dust protection — Duo IP68 vs Fold 8 IP48.
  4. Unlock method — Duo uses Touch ID, not Face ID.
  5. Shape — Fold 8 is wide and short; Duo is tall and conventional.
