Air Fryers in Dubai: An Honest Buying Guide (Sizes, Running Costs and What Not to Cook)

The short answer: an air fryer is worth buying if you cook for one to four people and you're tired of heating a full oven for a tray of chips. Independent lab testing found an air fryer used about a third of the electricity of an oven for the same portion of chips and under half for a small roast chicken. It will not replace your oven, the advertised litre figure is not usable space, and the "healthier" claim is true in a narrower way than most people think — explained below, with the research behind it.
Air fryers are the single most-returned small kitchen appliance we handle, and almost always for the same reason: the customer bought the wrong size. This guide is written to prevent that.
What an air fryer actually is
It's a small fan oven. That's the whole technology.
A heating element at the top and a high-speed fan push very hot air around a compact, well-insulated chamber. Because the chamber is small and the airflow is fast, food browns and crisps far more quickly than in a conventional oven, where the air moves slowly through a large cavity you first have to heat.
There is no frying happening. Nothing is immersed in oil. The name is marketing, and understanding that is the key to using one well — if you treat it as a small, fast, very efficient convection oven, you'll get good results. If you treat it as a deep fryer, you'll be disappointed by anything involving wet batter.
Is it actually healthier? Yes — but for one specific reason
This is where most air fryer articles, including the one this replaces, go vague. Here's what the research actually shows.
The oil reduction is real
Deep-fried potato products absorb a lot of oil — around 40% oil content by the time they come out of the fryer. Air frying transfers heat by hot air rather than immersion, so the oil you use is the oil you brush or spray on, typically a teaspoon or two. That is a large, straightforward reduction in fat and calories, and it's the main health argument.
The acrylamide reduction is the more interesting finding
Acrylamide is a compound that forms when starchy foods — potatoes, root vegetables, bread — are cooked at high temperatures. The IARC classifies it as a probable human carcinogen, and it's the reason food safety authorities tell you to cook chips to golden rather than dark brown.
A peer-reviewed study in Frontiers in Nutrition compared air-fried and deep-fried potato fries directly. Air frying at 190°C for 18 minutes produced up to 47% less acrylamide than deep frying at 180°C for 6 minutes. The same study found up to 57% less 5-HMF, another compound of concern formed during high-heat cooking.
It also found air-fried fries had a higher proportion of slowly digestible starch (48.5–58.4%) than deep-fried ones (45.6%), which the researchers suggested may mean a more gradual effect on blood sugar.
How to reduce acrylamide further
Since this is the one health factor genuinely in your control:
- Soak cut potatoes in water for at least 15 minutes before cooking, then dry them thoroughly. This measurably reduces acrylamide formation.
- Aim for golden, not deep brown. The darkest pieces carry the most. Research suggests dropping the temperature by as little as 10°C makes a meaningful difference.
- Store raw potatoes somewhere cool and dark, not in the fridge. Refrigerating potatoes increases their sugar content, which increases acrylamide when they're cooked.
- Sweet potatoes form less than russet or standard white potatoes.
- It only applies to starchy foods. Chicken, fish, meat and most vegetables don't form meaningful acrylamide. This is a chips-and-potatoes issue.
One claim we've removed
The previous version of this page said air fryers "often retain more nutrients compared to conventional cooking methods." We can't support that, so we've taken it out. Nutrient retention depends far more on temperature and cooking time than on the appliance, and for some vitamins a short steam or a microwave does better than any dry-heat method. If you want to preserve vitamin C in broccoli, an air fryer is not the tool.
Honest summary: an air fryer is a meaningful improvement on deep frying, both in fat and in harmful compounds. It is not a health device. Air-fried chips are better chips, not a vegetable.
What it costs to run in Dubai
This is the part worth doing in dirhams rather than in adjectives.
Independent lab testing by Which? measured the same dishes in an air fryer and a conventional electric oven:
| Dish | Air fryer | Electric oven |
|---|---|---|
| Roast chicken (1.3–1.4 kg) | 53 min · 0.54 kWh | 76 min · 1.157 kWh |
| Chips (320 g) | 23 min · 0.287 kWh | 33 min · 0.863 kWh |
| Jacket potato | 48 min · 0.392 kWh | 68 min · 1.084 kWh |
| Cake | 33 min · 0.223 kWh | 56 min · 0.710 kWh |
Converting to DEWA rates — a mid-consumption household on the 28 fils/kWh slab, plus the 6 fils/kWh fuel surcharge, so roughly 34 fils per kWh:
| Dish | Air fryer | Electric oven | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roast chicken | ~18 fils | ~39 fils | ~21 fils |
| Chips | ~10 fils | ~29 fils | ~19 fils |
| Jacket potato | ~13 fils | ~37 fils | ~24 fils |
| Cake | ~8 fils | ~24 fils | ~16 fils |
Now the honest part. If you use the air fryer instead of the oven four times a week, you'll save roughly 40 to 50 dirhams a year. That is not a reason to buy an appliance. Anyone telling you an air fryer will cut your DEWA bill meaningfully is selling you something.
The genuine wins are different:
Time. Every dish above cooked 20 to 30 minutes faster, with no preheat worth speaking of. Over a week of weeknight dinners that's real.
Kitchen heat — and this one matters more in Dubai than anywhere. Running an oven at 200°C for 76 minutes puts a lot of heat into your kitchen. From May to September your air conditioning then has to remove that heat, so you pay twice: once to make it, once to get rid of it. An air fryer runs for less time, in a smaller and better-insulated chamber, and vents far less into the room. We can't put a precise figure on the AC saving without measuring your specific kitchen, so we won't invent one — but anyone who has cooked a roast in a Dubai apartment in July understands the point immediately.
It gets used. The most efficient oven in the world saves nothing if the effort of heating it means you order delivery instead.
Choosing the right size — the part people get wrong
Almost every disappointed air fryer owner we meet bought one that was too small, and the reason is that the advertised capacity is misleading.
The litre figure is the basket volume, not the usable food volume. Air frying only works if hot air can move around the food. Pile the basket and you get food that steams on the inside and stays pale on top. In practice you can use about half to two-thirds of the stated capacity.
A realistic guide:
| Stated capacity | Realistically feeds | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3.5 L | 1–2 people | Single person, couple, reheating, small counters |
| 4–5.5 L | 2–4 people | The most popular bracket — small family, most apartments |
| 6–8 L | 4–6 people | Family cooking, a whole small chicken, batch snacks |
| 9 L and above, or oven-style | 6+ or batch | Large families, entertaining, Ramadan cooking |
| Dual basket (2 × 4–5 L) | 4–6 people | Cooking two things at two temperatures at once |
Dual-basket models are the most useful development in this category in the last few years and the old version of this page didn't mention them. Two independent chambers mean your chicken and your vegetables finish at the same moment at different temperatures, which removes the single most annoying limitation of a one-basket machine. They cost more and take more counter space. If you cook full meals rather than single items, they're worth the money.
Measure your counter before you buy, including the height. These need clearance above and behind for the air to exhaust — typically about 12 cm. An air fryer that doesn't fit under your wall cabinet is an expensive ornament.
A note for Ramadan. If you're cooking for iftar — samosas, spring rolls, kebabs, pastries, batch after batch — size up beyond what the table above suggests, or buy dual-basket. A 3.5 L basket cooking for eight people means six rounds and a very long evening. This is the single most common sizing mistake we see in the weeks before Ramadan.
Types available
Basket air fryers. The standard drawer design. Best crisping for the money because the chamber is small and the airflow is concentrated. Easiest to clean. Limited capacity and you can't see the food without pulling the drawer out.
Dual-basket air fryers. Two chambers, independent controls. Most useful for cooking complete meals. More counter space, more money.
Oven-style air fryers. A countertop convection oven with air fry mode, usually with racks and a glass door. More capacity, you can see inside, and it does genuine baking and grilling. Crisps slightly less aggressively than a basket of the same wattage because the chamber is larger. Takes significant counter space.
Air fryer toaster ovens. Same as above with toasting and broiling. Sensible if you're replacing two appliances with one and short on space.
Pressure cooker and air fryer combinations. Pressure cook and then crisp in one pot — good for a whole chicken or pulled meat. Heavy, tall, and more parts to clean. Worth it only if you'll genuinely use both functions.
What not to cook in it
Nobody tells you this at the point of sale, and it's the fastest way to be disappointed in week one.
Wet batter. Anything in a loose flour-and-egg batter will drip through the basket and bake onto the element before it sets. If you want proper beer-battered fish, you need oil. Dry coatings — breadcrumbs, panko, seasoned flour — work very well.
Loose leafy greens. The fan will blow spinach and kale around the chamber and onto the element. Weight them down or skip it.
Large roasts and whole birds over about 1.5 kg. They won't fit, and if they do they'll cook unevenly. This is an oven job.
Cheese on its own. It melts straight through the basket. Cheese on top of something solid is fine.
A full basket. Covered above, and it's the most common error by a wide margin. Cook in two batches; the second one takes less time because the machine is already hot.
Aerosol non-stick spray. Propellants in cheap cooking sprays degrade the non-stick coating on most baskets. Brush oil on, or use a pump bottle.
And the cleaning reality
Air fryers are easy to clean compared with a deep fryer and harder than a microwave. Fat aerosolises and condenses on the inside of the chamber and on the heating element, which is the part no basket design lets you reach easily. If you don't wipe the element area every few weeks it starts to smoke and smell.
Buy a model with a dishwasher-safe basket and crisper plate, and check that the plate lifts out — the ones where it's fixed in place are miserable to clean properly.
Brands and power in the UAE
We stock air fryers from brands with established service networks in the UAE, which matters more on a small appliance than people expect: a 250-dirham machine that can't be repaired locally is disposable.
On wattage: most full-size air fryers draw 1,400 to 2,000 W. Higher wattage generally means faster preheat and better browning, but it also means that if you run one on the same circuit as a kettle and a microwave in an older apartment, you may trip the breaker. Worth knowing before you blame the appliance.
On voltage: the UAE runs 220–240 V, 50 Hz. A 120 V appliance bought in or shipped from the United States will not work here on a plug adapter alone — adapters change the plug shape, not the voltage. If you're buying from outside the UAE, confirm the voltage and confirm that the warranty is valid here. On a small appliance it usually isn't.

Frequently asked questions
Are air fryers healthier than deep frying? Yes, in two measurable ways. Deep-fried potatoes reach around 40% oil content, while air frying uses only the oil you add. A peer-reviewed study also found air frying produced up to 47% less acrylamide, a probable carcinogen that forms in starchy foods at high heat. It reduces the harm of fried food rather than making it health food.
What size air fryer do I need? For one or two people, 2–3.5 litres. For two to four, 4–5.5 litres. For four to six, 6–8 litres or a dual-basket model. Expect to use only half to two-thirds of the stated capacity, because hot air has to circulate around the food.
Do air fryers use a lot of electricity? No — they use less than an oven for the same food. Independent testing measured 0.287 kWh for a portion of chips versus 0.863 kWh in an electric oven. At Dubai rates that's about 10 fils against 29 fils. The realistic annual saving is 40–50 dirhams, so buy one for the speed, not the bill.
Can an air fryer replace my oven? Not entirely. It won't handle a large roast, a full tray of baking, or more than about 1.5 kg of food at once. It replaces your oven for the small, quick jobs you currently heat a whole oven to do — which is most weeknight cooking.
Why is my air fryer food not crispy? Almost always because the basket is too full. Hot air needs to reach every surface. Cook in two batches, pat food dry before it goes in, and give it a light brush of oil.
Do I need to preheat an air fryer? Usually two to three minutes is enough, and many models don't need it at all. This is most of the time saving against a conventional oven, which needs ten to fifteen minutes before you can start.
Is an air fryer good for Ramadan cooking? Very — it handles samosas, spring rolls, kebabs and pastries in batches without a pan of hot oil or the smell through the apartment. Size up though: a small basket cooking for a large iftar means many rounds. Dual-basket or 8 litres and above is the sensible choice.
