About the Product

The RENPHO Active Massage Gun RP-GM171 is a handheld percussion massager with a 10mm stroke, five speed settings and five interchangeable heads, running up to 3.5 hours on a single USB-C charge. At under 700 grams it is light enough to hold against your own shoulder without your arm tiring, which is the practical difference between a massage gun you use and one that sits in a drawer.

What it actually does

A percussion massager works by striking muscle tissue rapidly at a set depth. Two numbers decide how it feels, and most listings leave both out.

Amplitude is how far the head travels on each stroke — how deep the percussion reaches. The RP-GM171 has a 10mm stroke. That is a genuine mid-range figure: entry-level guns run around 8mm and feel more like vibration than percussion, while professional units reach 14–16mm and are frankly too aggressive for most people. 10mm is enough to feel it working through a quadriceps or a glute, without making you flinch on a calf.

Stall force is how hard you can press before the motor gives up. At 50 lbs (about 23 kg), the RP-GM171 holds up to firm pressure on large muscle groups. Cheaper units stall at 20–30 lbs, which means the head stops moving at the exact moment you lean in on the knot you were trying to reach.

Taken together: this is a capable mid-range massager for home and gym use. It is not a clinical or professional-grade device, and we'd rather tell you that than let you discover it.

Quiet enough to use in a shared flat

Rated at 45 dB or below, roughly the level of a quiet conversation. The high-power brushless motor and the vented housing — side and top exhausts to shed heat — are what keep the noise down and stop it getting hot during a long session. You can use this in a living room with the television on, or in an apartment at night, without annoying anybody.

Five heads, five jobs

Each attachment changes how the percussion lands:

  • Ball head — large muscle groups. Quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes. The one you'll use most.
  • Flat / annular cushion head — broad, even pressure across larger areas, and the gentlest of the set.
  • Bullet head — concentrated pressure on a small area. Trigger points, feet, palms. Use it briefly.
  • U-shaped head — straddles the spine or an Achilles tendon so the percussion lands on the muscle either side, not on the bone.
  • Crescent head — contoured for shoulders, neck and the curve of a limb.

Battery and charging

A 2500 mAh lithium-ion cell gives up to 3.5 hours of total use — weeks of normal sessions between charges, not days. It charges over USB-C at 5V/2A, and the cable works both A-to-C and C-to-C, so it runs off the same charger as your phone or laptop. No proprietary dock to lose.

The 10-minute auto-off is a feature, not a limitation

The unit stops automatically after 10 minutes of continuous running. People sometimes read that as a flaw. It isn't — 10 minutes is already longer than you should spend on any single muscle group, and the cut-off protects both the motor and you. Switch it back on if you're moving to a different area.

Who it suits

Anyone training regularly — before a session to warm tissue up, after one to work through stiffness. Also sensible for desk workers with tight shoulders and necks, and for anyone on their feet all day. It fits in the supplied carry case alongside gym kit or in hand luggage.

Please read this before you buy

A massage gun is a fitness and recovery tool, not a medical device, and we don't make therapeutic claims for it. Use it on muscle only — never directly on bone, joints, the spine itself, the front or sides of the neck, the head, or over an open wound, bruise, recent injury or varicose veins. Start on the lowest speed and build up.

Check with a doctor or physiotherapist before using one if you are pregnant, taking blood thinners, have a pacemaker or other implanted device, have osteoporosis, diabetes with reduced sensation, a blood clotting disorder, or any recent fracture or surgery. If something hurts, stop. Soreness the day after a session is normal; sharp pain during one is not.
